Sum, ‘I am’에 대한 추가 설명
5a 지난 장에서 불규칙 동사 sum, ‘I am’에 대해 학습하였습니다(4e). 이 동사에 대해 좀 더 알 필요가 있습니다.
(i) est/sunt가 문장의 맨 앞에 올 때, 대개 ‘there is/are’를 의미합니다. 예를 들면,
There is a girl… est puella…
(ii) 두 단어로 된 문장에서 est는 대개 ‘it is’를 의미합니다. 예를 들면 Caesar est-It ‘s Caesar.
(iii) ‘Delia is a slave’에서 ‘Delia’는 주어(따라서 주격의 형태)이고 ‘is’는 동사입니다. Delia가 즉 ‘slave’입니다(보어라고 합니다). ‘Delia’가 주격이기 때문에 ‘slave’도 주격이 됩니다.
따라서 ‘to be’라는 동사는 주격 보어를 취합니다.

전치사
5b ‘towards, into, from, through, against, with’와 같은 소단어들이며 명사 앞에 놓입니다.
사용례: e (or ex) bello: out of war
cum filio: with the son
in aqua: in the water
e 또는 ex는 ‘out of’, cum은 ‘with’를 의미합니다. bello 또는 filio처럼 -o로 끝나는 격변화 어미는 아직 학습하지 않았습니다. 이 격변화 어미는 탈격 (ablative case, in aqua에서 aqua의 어미에 주의)라고 하나 지금은 걱정할 필요가 없고 나중에 학습하게 될 것입니다.
뒤에 명사의 목적격을 취하는 전치사도 있습니다. 목적격은 이미 학습하였습니다.
5c 다음 전치사들을 노트해 두십시오.
(i) 목적격이 뒤에 오는 전치사: ad towards, near, in into, contra against, per through, post after.
사용례: ad aquam towards the water, in aquam into the water, contra Anglum against the Englishman.
(ii) 탈격이 뒤에 오는 전치사: ex out of, in in, cum with.
사용례: ex aqua out of the water, in aqua in the water, cum Christo with Christ.
주의해야 할 점은 뒤에 목적격이 오는 in의 의미는 ‘into’입니다. 뒤에 탈격이 오는 in의 의미는 ‘in’입니다. 목적격에 대해서는 이미 학습하였으므로 약간의 주의만 하면 문제가 없습니다.

동사 possum
5d sum ‘I am’은 복합 형태로 많이 나타납니다. 가장 일반적인 것은 possum, I can, am able (to)입니다. 이것은 pot-(‘able’, cf potential)가 sum과 결합하여 possum, pot-es, pot-est, pos-sumus, pot-estis, pos-sunt, 부정사 posse, to be able과 같이 활용(conjugate)됩니다. t + s가 -ss-로 변한 것을 관찰하시기 바랍니다.
부정사와 결합합니다. 예 videre possumus, we can/are able to see.
금지 명령문
5e ‘don’t’에 해당하는 라틴어는 noli (s) nolite (pl)입니다. 말 그대로는 ‘do not want’를 의미하며, possum처럼 부정사를 취합니다. 따라서 noli venire는 don’t come(s)(오지 마시오)! nolite festinare는 don’t hurry (pl)(서둘지 마시오)입니다.
